Why we need a new generation of leaders

new Leaders

The traditional model of leadership is dying. Through my recent conversation with Walt Morgan – former Navy commander, helicopter pilot, and now integral coach – I discovered The Power of Authentic Leadership. Why we urgently need a new generation of leaders. His unique perspective, shaped by decades of experience across military, academic, and corporate environments, offers fresh insights into what modern leadership should look like. Let me share what I learned.

The Leadership Crisis We’re Not Talking About

The leadership crisis we’re experiencing isn’t about a lack of leaders – it’s about the kind of leaders we have. Through my conversation with Walt, I discovered that the traditional image of a leader as someone directing masses toward a singular goal is not just outdated – it’s potentially harmful in our complex, interconnected world.

Leadership Begins Within

“Leadership starts with mastering yourself,” Walt told me, leaning forward in his chair, his eyes reflecting the passion behind his words. “It’s not about having all the answers – it’s about having the courage to ask better questions.” This resonated deeply with my own experience in building The Small Reset community.

The Power of Authentic Leadership

What struck me most was Walt’s emphasis on authenticity. Drawing from his military background, he shared how the most effective leaders he encountered weren’t those who projected perfection, but those who demonstrated genuine vulnerability. “In the cockpit,” he explained, “pretending you know everything isn’t just ineffective – it’s dangerous.”

Leading in a Virtual World

The pandemic has fundamentally altered how we think about leadership. As we discussed virtual teams and remote collaboration, Walt shared fascinating insights about maintaining human connection through screens. “The technology isn’t the barrier,” he noted. “It’s our mindset about presence that needs to shift.”

The Integral Approach to Leadership

Through our conversation, it became clear that integral coaching – Walt’s current passion – offers valuable tools for developing this new kind of leader. It’s not about following a predetermined path but about understanding your unique journey. As someone who has worked with numerous coaching methodologies, I found his approach refreshingly holistic.

Creating Leaders, Not Followers

The leadership we need today isn’t about mastering millions – it’s about mastering ourselves and creating spaces where others can do the same. Walt’s experience teaching at universities showed him that the best leaders don’t create followers; they create more leaders.

Learning from Failure

As our conversation drew to a close, Walt shared a personal story about a failed mission that taught him more than any success. This vulnerability, this willingness to learn from mistakes, exemplifies the kind of leadership we need – human, authentic, and growth-oriented.

The Path Forward

Looking ahead, it’s clear that the future belongs to leaders who understand that their power lies not in controlling others but in empowering them. As Walt put it, “Leadership isn’t a destination – it’s a journey of continuous growth and service.”

For those ready to step into this new kind of leadership, the path begins with a simple question: How can you better lead yourself today? The answer to that question might just be the first step in becoming the leader our world needs.
